Community Engagement Fair Takes Place This Wednesday

The fall Community Engagement Fair will be held this Wednesday, September 10. More than 25 community partners have registered for the event.

Organized by the Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI), the biannual fair brings community partners to Barry’s main campus for presentations and discussions with students, faculty, and staff.

Community partners registered for the fair include

Branches, Center for Independent Living of South Florida, Heroes Unite, HistoryMiami, Mentoring Valuable Protégés, Miami-Dade Elections Department, Miami Jewish Health Systems, Miami Rescue Mission, The Salvation Army, and the State of Florida Guardian ad Litem Program.

This academic year, the fair will feature a special workshop on Experiential Learning in the Context of Barry University’s Quality Enhancement Plan. The QEP Implementation Committee will be represented at the workshop. Designed for community partners, the workshop will precede the usual showcase of community partners’ programs, services, and opportunities.

Faculty are invited to bring their classes to meet community partners and discuss opportunities for service-learning, community-based research, and internships. This segment of the fair will take place in the Andreas Courtyard from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Deliberative Dialogue Scheduled for September 23

The first forum in the Deliberative Dialogue Series for the 2014-2015 academic year will be held on September 23, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., in the Andreas Building, Room 111.

The topic of the forum is “College Access and Rising Tuition.”

Early Preparation for Residence Hall Move-Out Drive

The Department of Housing and Residence Life and the CCSI have set the stage for Move-Out Drive 2015.

Previously known as Dorm Drive, the Move-Out Drive project entails collecting clothing, household items, and educational supplies and donating them for charitable purposes. The project takes place late spring as students prepare to move out of the residence halls on Barry’s main campus.

As part of their recent orientation, resident assistants (RAs) met with community agencies that benefit from the Move-Out Drive. The agencies are based in two Miami neighborhoods, Overtown and Liberty City.

The CCSI coordinated the pre-service and community service activities for the RA orientation. Facilitated by MCCJ, a Barry community partner, and CCSI staff, the pre-service activities included exercises designed to help RAs explore issues of privilege, oppression, perspective, and identity. The RAs received instruction in effective approaches to co-curricular service. The orientation program also included an historical tour of Miami, a community service project at the Lotus House Women’s Shelter, and a tour of the Miami Rescue Mission Men’s Center.

At Lotus House in Overtown, the RAs spread 80 bags of mulch and painted eight residence rooms.

According to Alberto Lorenzo, associate director for residence education, the RAs were “deeply impacted” by the orientation program. “Several students have ideas of initiating their own service projects in the residence halls as a result of this experience,” he said.
