Barry President Receives Florida Campus Compact Founders’ Award
Florida Campus Compact recently honored Barry University President Sister Linda Bevilacqua, OP, PhD, was its Founders’ Award. Sister Linda received the award “for being a champion of Florida Campus Compact, resulting in a culture of service and civic involvement for generations to come, and for her unyielding determination to make our world a better place for all.”
The award was presented at Florida Campus Compact’s Annual Awards Gala, hosted by Palm Beach State College, Boca Raton. Palm Beach State College President Dr. Dennis Gallon, who presented the award, noted that Sister Linda has been a longstanding member of the organization’s executive committee. In addition, she is active in several professional and community organizations, Gallon said.
Barry University representatives at the event were Dr. Karen Callaghan, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Dr. Glenn Bowen, director of the Center for Community Service Initiatives; Dr. Sean Foreman, associate professor of political science; and students Tyler Greene, Shanique Kingston, and Donté Roberts.
Florida Campus Compact is an organization of more than 50 college and university presidents committed to advancing the civic purposes of higher education. Part of a national presidential organization, Florida Campus Compact supports community service, service-learning, and civic engagement by providing consultative and professional development services, public communication, and funding to higher education institutions.
The Florida Campus Compact Founders’ Award was established in 2007 in honor of Congressman Allen Boyd. The award recognizes an individual for support of the organization’s mission, growth, and sustainability and for civic contributions to the state of Florida.

Proposals Being Accepted for March 12 Symposium
The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) is accepting proposals for Barry University’s inaugural Community Engagement Symposium. Proposals should focus on such topics as service-learning, civic engagement, community-based research, community-focused fieldwork/internships, community-engaged scholarship, and community partnerships.
The symposium is scheduled for Wednesday, March 12, 2014. This event will bring together campus and community stakeholders to network and explore community engagement projects, practices, and perspectives.
Goals of the symposium are to (1) identify community needs and resources for building capacity to address social, economic, and environmental issues; (2) share strategies for effective university–community partner collaboration; (3) explain the concepts of service-learning, community-based research, and community-engaged scholarship; and (4) explore methods for evaluating community engagement outcomes for various stakeholders.
Proposals are being accepted for 45-minute concurrent presentations, including panel discussions and roundtables, during two sessions of the symposium. There will also be a poster session.
The proposal form and further information are available in the Community Engagement Management System (CEMS) at www.barry.edu/service. The proposal submission deadline is December 9.

Nominations and applications are being accepted for Barry University’s inaugural Community Engagement Awards.
Award categories are Community Impact (for Students and Student Organizations), Service-Learning Faculty, Community-Based Research, Engaged Scholarship, Community Partnership, Engaged Department, and Community Engagement Educator.
The Awards Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2014. This event will coincide with the Community Engagement Symposium.
The nomination/application form is available in the Community Engagement Management System (CEMS) at www.barry.edu/service. Nominations/applications must be submitted by January 21.
