Faculty from ADSOE and students from the third counseling cohort in The Bahamas volunteered at Nassau’s Fox Hill Community Centre as part of a service-learning project. Fox Hill has been housing families displaced and impacted by Hurricane Dorian since early September.

Dr. Raul Machuca, Associate Professor, and 13 Bahamian Counseling students from the School and Clinical Mental Health Counseling specializations, visited and interacted with both Bahamian and Haitian families at the Centre. This effort reinforces the learning of advocacy and social justice learning outcomes of the CSL 629 Social and Cultural Issues in Counseling Class. Associate Dean Dr. Lilia DiBello and Assistant Professor Dr. Baxlee Bynum also visited the shelter on another trip to offer support and services.

Students enrolled in the course made three visits to Fox Hill in the early part of their semester. Classes are held on alternating weekends in Nassau. Donations from ADSOE students and Counseling faculty made it possible to offer art, play and wellness resources necessary for the engagement with the families located at the shelter.
