Feast of St. Dominic

Thursday 8/8/19 | Noon
Cor Jesu Chapel

St. Dominic de Guzman was the founder of the Order of Preachers (commonly known as the Dominican Order), women and men whose lives are marked by study, common life, prayer, and preaching. He founded the Order in Southern France in the 13th century. The Adrian Dominican Sisters who founded Barry University are part of this great Dominican Family.

The Dominican Order’s mission was to respond with the preaching of God’s grace and love to a people who had lost all hope in the goodness of this world. Dominican Spirituality is marked by a life of study and learning aimed at responding to those in need. The Order’s motto is “contempla aliis tradere” (give unto others from the fruits of your contemplation). Our motto at Barry University summarizes Dominican Spirituality with the words:  * LEARN * REFLECT * SERVE.

Come celebrate our Dominican Heritage at the mass for the Feast of our Father Dominic.

Feast of Assumption of Blessed Mary

Thursday 8/15/19 | Noon
Cor Jesu Chapel

On August 15th, the Catholic Church celebrates the birth into eternal life of Mary, the mother of Jesus.  This feast celebrates the ancient Christian teaching that Mary, because of her cooperation with and unique role in God´s saving plan, is the first member of the Church to experience the fullness of resurrected life secured for all by Christ´s own life-giving death and resurrection. In Mary, the Church and the whole communion of saints sees itself, glorious and risen, united to the Risen Lord Jesus in the fulfillment of God´s universal Reign of justice and compassion for all.

Feast of St. Rose of Lima

Friday 8/23/19 | Noon
Cor Jesu Chapel

Saint Rose of Lima (1586- 1617)

Saint Rose of Lima, T.O.S.D. (April 20,1586 - August 24, 1617), was a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic in Lima, Peru, who became known for both her life of severe asceticism and her care of the needy of the city through her own private efforts.  A lay member of the Dominican Order, she has been declared a saint by the Catholic Church, being the first person in both the Americas to be canonized as a saint.

Rose was beatified by Pope Clement IX on May 10, 1667, and canonized on April 12, 1671, by Pope Clement X.

As a member of the Dominican Family, St. Rose of Lima and her legacy are part of the rich heritage of Barry University.
