About the School of Professional And Career Education

Tradition and History

Barry University is a Catholic institution of higher education founded in 1940 by the Adrian Dominican Sisters. Originally founded as Barry College for Women, the college became known as Barry University in 1981. Barry has grown into a coeducational university that is one of the leading centers for education, with academic centers throughout Florida. Grounded in the liberal arts tradition, Barry University is a scholarly community committed to the highest academic standards in undergraduate, graduate and professional education.

In 1971, Barry University recognized the unique educational needs of the working adult learner, and established what is now known as the School of Professional And Career Education (PACE). By 1982, PACE operated in 25 off campus sites to serve the adult learner population with schedules and academic support that accommodated their busy lifestyles and work demands, while still maintaining the highest quality education upon which Barry University’s reputation was founded.

Designed for you, the adult learner

PACE Students

Specifically, PACE provides flexibility in degree completion at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Learners can self pace their degree pursuits – classes are offered once per week for 8 weeks, and they can determine if full time (2 courses every 8 weeks) or part time (1 course every 8 weeks) works best for them. PACE operates sites throughout the state of Florida; learners may also conveniently access degrees and individual courses online as well as in class. Non credit, professional development programs are also available.

Credit for professional experience and life long learning

PACE Career

Barry University is committed to transformative education achieved through life-long learning. Our internationally recognized Portfolio program is evidence of this core commitment of the university. The essence of the portfolio is the value of the adult learning experience throughout one’s professional journey; through this process, adult learners can utilize a variety of sources to validate college level learning, and apply this knowledge to their undergraduate degree, up to 30 credits. Sources include military service, CLEP testing, licenses and certifications, DANTES, PONSI and other methods. A maximum of 90 credits, including transfer credits from other accredited institutions is considered, which reduces the time and tuition costs needed to complete a degree program.

An affordable, accelerated private university experience

PACE Experience

Although Barry University is a private university, there are many opportunities for our learners to avail themselves of a quality university experience at a very reasonable cost. The structure of terms offered through the School of Professional And Career Education (each term is only 8 weeks in length) allows adult learners to be eligible for financial aid availability as full time students (2 courses every 8 weeks). This, coupled with the portfolio program providing for evaluation of professional work experience for academic credit (up to 30 credits; the equivalent of a year of college!), as well as credit for specific licensure and certifications provides adult learners with a financial feasible path towards their ultimate goal of achieving their degree. Ask our advisors to provide you with a financial worksheet outlining these many cost saving opportunities!
