Sigma Tau Delta Writing Contest

For all writers of Fiction, Poetry, Graphic Novels, Hint Fiction, and Essays, submit your best work for the chance to win a Certificate of Award from the Department of English & Foreign Languages, presented at this year’s Spring Honors Convocation. There will be a first place prize and an honorable mention in each above category.

In addition to the award, winners in each category will receive $50, their names will be inscribed on a permanent department plaque, and their submission will be published in the next issue of What Oft Was Thought, our award-winning literary journal.

Email your submissions as attachments with the subject line “Writing Contest Submission” to agreenbaum@barry.edu before February 8, 2020. Results will be announced by late April.

Contest Rules

  • Open to all registered Barry University students
  • Students may enter in all five categories (3,500 total word maximum)
  • Maximum of five entries per person
  • Entries will not be returned
  • Deadline for submissions is February 8, 2020

Submission Requirements

  • 12-point, Times New Roman
  • Format: .doc or .docx (Word document)
  • For each submission, state which category each submission is for. The categories are:
    • Fiction
    • Poetry
    • Graphic Novels
    • Hint Fiction
    • Essays
  • In a separate attachment, titled “Personal Information,” please provide the following information:
    • Name
    • Student number 
    • Permanent address
    • Telephone number
    • Email address
    • Academic major
    • A 2-3 sentence biography that reflects your particular interest in writing.
