Honors Societies

Phi Eta Sigma

Honoring academic excellence among freshmen, Phi Eta Sigma was founded in 1923 and has over 375 U.S. chapters and over 700,000 members. As America's oldest and largest freshman honor society, it awards several scholarships a year to deserving members.

Phi Eta Sigma is a national honor society whose goal is to encourage and reward academic excellence among first-year students in institutions of higher learning.

Who should apply: First-year students who have finished their first semester at Barry University

Moderator/Contact Person: Dr. Leah Hutton Blumenfeld, Department of History & Political Science, O’ Laughlin 241; (305) 899-3386; lblumenfeld@barry.edu

To be eligible, first-year students would have:

  1. completed a minimum of 12 credits and a maximum of 30 credits;
  2. achieved a term GPA of 3.5

The term GPA is based on having completed college level courses in which a grade is earned. Remedial courses and "pass/fail" courses may not be counted toward the 12- credit minimum.

At the beginning of the Spring semester, the faculty moderator generates a list to identify eligible students. Once identified, students will be contacted and informed of the application process. The deadline to apply is usually mid-March.

Important Note:

Election to an honor society at Barry University is a privilege, not a right. It is the responsibility of a student applying for membership to an honor society to mention, document, and explain his/her qualifications for membership. Deadlines are strictly enforced.
