20 YEARS OF SIGMA XI, THE NATIONAL RESEARCH HONOR SOCIETY ON THE BARRY UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

Barry University inducts new student members

April, 2018

Barry University’s Chapter of Sigma Xi, The National Research Honor Society celebrates its 20th anniversary this academic year. The Barry University chapter was organized by Dr. Allen Sanborn, Professor of Biology in 1998 at the request of Sr. John Karen Frei, though the organization itself dates back to 1886 when it was founded at Cornell University. Upon reflecting on this 20th-year milestone, Dr. Sanborn had this to say: “It has been rewarding to see the continued evolution and success of the Barry University Chapter. Election to Sigma Xi is an honor for any researcher and the Barry chapter has recognized the beginning of so many significant careers in scientific research that started right here at Barry. Organizations like Sigma Xi are critically important for the advancement of scientific research because of the platform it provides for the exchange of ideas and student development.”

Since the induction of its first 30 members in April 1998, the Barry chapter has inducted 181 members: faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students in the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, and Education. Many of the student inductees of the Barry chapter have gone on to have impressive careers in research as master’s and PhD-level professionals.

The Barry chapter of Sigma Xi has a series of events planned this academic year, culminating in its 20th anniversary induction ceremony in April, 2018
