Begin Your Career as a Firefighter

Professional firefighters attend to the needs of individuals and communities during times of crises, disasters, and emergencies. Career opportunities for firefighters who are also trained as emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics are projected to continue to grow. A firefighting career is more than a job, it is a call to serve the community.

Academy Entrance Physical Agility Test

Date: December 6, 2025

The Physical Agility Test is the first step in the Barry University Fire Academy application program. Invitations to apply to our competitive Fire Academy are based on your individual performance on the PAT.

The Barry University Fire Academy Physical Agility Test (PAT) is based upon a comprehensive job task analysis, these determined tasks that are deemed critical, ones performed frequently by firefighters.

This validated job simulation test is used to objectively measure firefighter's performance. The tasks are performed sequentially, and accurately reflect the metabolic demand imposed on a firefighter during actual emergencies.

Further information on the test, skills, performance expectations, and more, can be found in the orientations packet.

Additionally, students must have completed a State or Nationally approved EMT program or a 40-hour EMR program as a pre-requisite for the Fire Academy.
