A nationally respected legal educator, scholar, and academic leader, Charles H. “Charlie” Rose III brings decades of experience in legal education, advocacy, and public service to his role as Dean of Barry University’s School of Law. His career reflects a deep commitment to student-centered learning, academic excellence, and the advancement of mission-driven legal education.
Dean Rose joins Barry Law from Ohio Northern University’s Pettit College of Law, where he previously served as Dean and Professor of Law. In this role, he led strategic growth initiatives, strengthened academic programming, and advanced student success efforts while fostering a collaborative law school culture. Prior to his deanship at Ohio Northern, he spent 14 years at Stetson University College of Law, where he built one of the nation’s most highly regarded advocacy programs as Director of the Center for Excellence in Advocacy and Professor of Excellence in Trial Advocacy. A multi-award-winning teacher and scholar, his work at Stetson helped shape generations of trial advocates and elevated the national profile of advocacy education.
Dean Rose’s professional background also includes more than two decades of service in the United States Army, where he served as a Judge Advocate and rose to the rank of Major. His military career included leadership roles as Senior Defense Counsel, Senior Trial Counsel, Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, and Associate Professor of Law at The Judge Advocate General’s School. His experience spans criminal law, military justice, professional responsibility, and evidence, informing both his scholarship and his approach to legal education.
An internationally recognized authority on trial advocacy and legal pedagogy, Dean Rose has taught and lectured across the United States and Europe, including programs at Oxford University, the University of Iceland, the American Bar Association, and the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. He is the author of numerous books and treatises widely used in law schools and legal practice nationwide, and he is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. A frequently sought-after keynote speaker, he is known for his thought leadership in advocacy education and ethical practice.
Dean Rose earned his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University at South Bend, his Juris Doctor from Notre Dame Law School, and his LL.M. from The Judge Advocate General’s School, United States Army. As Dean of Barry University School of Law, he is committed to strengthening academic excellence, supporting faculty innovation, and preparing students for impactful, ethical careers in the legal profession.
