The Pediatrics Biomechanics Seminar will be hosted by Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine  

Three (3) Continuing Education Contact Hours will be offered for the 2026 biennium.

Schedule

  • 9:00 am – 10:00 am: Comprehensive Biomechanics: Understanding of the Pediatric Foot 
  • 10:00 am – 11:00 am: Tweens to Teens – Understanding the Biomechanics of the Foot as it Matures into Adulthood 
  • 11:00 am – 12:00 am: Most Common Pediatric Lower Extremity Diagnoses & How to Evaluate and Treat 
    • To understand the most common foot and ankle pathologies associated with podopediatrics  involving orthotic treatments. Age specific protocols will be discussed. 
    • Understanding the long-term implications of foot types in starting with children and their correlation and prevention of many common adult kinetic chain pathologies including but not limited to bunions, hammertoes, neuromas, plantar fasciitis, and other common podiatric adult complaints.
    • Understand how to select the appropriate orthotic design and selection based on pathological foot-type. 
    • To understand how a foot evolves as it matures into its adult form. Learning the signs of foot maturity and how biomechanics treatment changes as a Childs foot matures into an adult.
    • Understand a way to be able to differentiate between a compensated and uncompensated rearfoot and forefoot varus deformity and their affect on gait. Thus the ability to differentiate between common pathological foot-types. 
    • Understand how to select the appropriate orthotic design and selection based on pathological foot-type. 
    • Learn about 10 common pediatric chief complaints and how to treat.
    • Learn about what goes into intoeing, toe walking, and other common pediatric biomechanics diagnosis
    • Learn about common sports medicine injuries and how the foot is involved and what can be done for prevention.

Dr.  Louis J. DeCaro is a Podiatric Physician who specializes in pediatrics with a special interest in sports medicine and biomechanics for both adults and pediatrics. On July 25th, 2014 he was installed as President of the American College of Foot and Ankle Pediatrics (ACFAP). Dr. DeCaro is currently in private practice in West Hatfield and a member of the surgical & medical staff at Franklin Medical Center and Holyoke Medical Center. He is the Director and originator of the Adult & Pediatric Gait Labs Biomechanics Clinic. The clinic was established in 2004 to better serve special needs children with podopediatric concerns and he routinely works alongside a Pediatric Rehabilitation Specialist and/or early intervention therapist and an Orthotist. 

  • Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine is approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education as a provider of continuing education in podiatric medicine. Barry University has approved the Clinical Instructor Workshop for a maximum of 3 continuing education contact hours to licensed Podiatrists.
