The core curriculum is designed to provide students with expertise in linking social work practice theory to conducting trauma-responsive practice, utilizing research for policy-making decisions, executive leadership in human service organizations, teaching and leadership in educational institutions, and the dissemination of practice knowledge to the practice community through scholarship and conference presentations. The program requires a minimum of 50 credits of course-based graduate study, plus a Capstone manuscript. The curriculum consists of 16, 3-credit courses. Upon successful completion of these courses, students formally move into Doctoral Candidacy and are required to enroll and complete the activities for a 2-credit Doctoral Capstone (SW-799, Continuous Matriculation). It is expected that students can complete their Capstone requirements in one semester. However, additional semester(s) of SW-799 might be needed if the Capstone requirements are not fully met within one semester, with a maximum of 2 additional semesters.
Part-time Program
Students enroll continuously in Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters, with at least 2 online courses (6 credits) each semester. Two consecutive courses are offered each semester, with only one synchronous online class per week (Wednesday evenings ET; attendance is mandatory). Students are expected to complete all program requirements, including successfully defending their Capstone within three years from the start of program matriculation.
In-Person Residency
During their second year of study, students are required to attend the 2-day, in-person residency on Barry University campus in Miami Shores, FL. This residency, or "learning intensive", is designed to provide students with opportunities to deepen their trauma-informed knowledge and skills, narrow down the focus of their Capstone manuscript, and collaborate with each other and Faculty in-person."
