About the Institute
With the retirement of Barry’s sixth president, Sister Linda Bevilacqua, OP, PhD, in June 2019, the Barry University Board of Trustees created “The Adrian Dominican Institute for Mission and Leadership” in her honor and her five predecessors:
The Dominican Sisters of Adrian, Michigan (the “Adrian Dominicans”) founded Barry College for Women in 1940. In 1975, by action of the Board of Trustees, Barry became fully a co-educational institution, and in 1981 Barry became a university.

Purpose
The primary purposes of the Adrian Dominican Institute for Mission and Leadership (ADIML) are: to deepen knowledge and understanding of Barry’s religious founders and sponsors, the Dominican Sisters of Adrian, Michigan Adrian, its identity as a Catholic, Dominican institution, and the communal responsibility to support, preserve and advance this living legacy. To serve as an agent for more inclusive, collaborative, and purposeful integration of the University’s Mission and Core Commitments into the University’s living and learning environment and to foster informed and committed lay leadership among Barry’s faculty and staff. -
Focus
The focus of the Institute is to foster informed and committed lay leadership, a timely and critical issue among U.S. Catholic institutions of higher education. Fostering excellence, diversity, inclusion, and equity are integral to the University’s efforts to achieve academic excellence and to promote ethical leadership among all members of the University community. -
Initiatives
Faithful to the University’s Dominican identity, the Institute will promote and facilitate learning, reflection and service through collaborative efforts and dialogue among diverse curricular and co-curricular units and initiatives. The Institute will seek to infuse the University’s Mission and Core Commitments into all aspects of the University’s life and educational experiences.
