The Honors Program at Barry is designed to challenge, enrich, and prepare especially motivated students to pursue their fullest potential. By participating in a rigorous curriculum rounded out by an array of edifying and interactive events, students explore crucial issues that we face in our daily lives. Students are given the space for discussion and debate and the opportunity to learn from experts in their fields. The Office of Financial Aid can assist with determining eligibility for the Honors Program.

The Monsignor William Barry Memorial Library is located in the center of the beautiful Miami Shores campus of Barry University. The Library is named in loving memory of Monsignor William Barry, one of the founders of Barry University and an inspirational figure in the Catholic Church within the Archdiocese of Miami. The extensive Library research collections include more than 950,000 physical items, over 40,000 print and on-line journal subscriptions, and several thousand on-line books and streaming video resources.

At Barry University, you will experience a small community atmosphere where you can always rely on our administrators and faculty for advice, encouragement and personal attention. We take great pride in giving individual attention from the very beginning. Continuing Education (CE) offers a variety of courses and non-credit programs designed to respond to the diverse educational interests and lifelong learning needs of individuals of all ages. We are committed to providing programs and services that are guided by Barry University's rich educational mission and intended to enhance your Barry experience. Through partnerships with others in the university community, we aim to create experiences that will help transform you into leaders for a just and humane world.

We are an NCAA Division II school and a member of the Sunshine State Conference with 12 varsity teams, including men's baseball, basketball, golf, soccer and tennis; and women's basketball, golf, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. So far, we've won 24 NCAA championships, had 338 All-Americans, 413 Scholar All-Americans, and nine NCAA "Women of the Year" finalists, the most of any Division II school. Not bad at all, but we're going for more.

Biography

Professor Vera is an interdisciplinary counseling scholar, educator, and practitioner. He holds a Ph.D. and a Master’s in Counselor Education (University of New Orleans, USA, 2002), a Counseling Psychology MS (CIPPSV, 1996, Venezuela), and a BEd in Guidance Counseling (LUZ, 1993, Venezuela). His postdoctoral work includes a clinical mental health counseling residency (The McFarland Institute, 2002, USA) and human science research, examining counselors’ ethics, politics, pedagogy discourse, emergent practices, and education in Latin America (University of Zulia, 2011). Likewise, he holds several mental health counseling professional credentials, such as Licensed Professional Counseling (LPC-CT), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC-FL), Licensed Professional Clinical Mental Health Counseling (LPCMHC-NM),  National Certified Counselor (NCC, NBCC), Certified Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS, CCE), Board-Certified Clinical Mental Health Counseling (BC-CMHC, NBCC), Mental Health Facilitator Master Trainer (MHF-MT, NBCC), and TeleMental Health Certificate (THTC-PESIS). 

Dr. Vera’s professional journey started serving marginalized populations as a social work assistant for the Ministry of Health (1979). Years later, he began his professorship journey (The University of Zulia, 1994). His teaching practices have been focused on reflective counseling practitioners’ education in different countries of the American hemisphere. His educational and clinical practices include people’s mental health-wellness understanding from holistic, learning, and preventive approaches nurtured by pedagogical-emancipatory principles, neuroscience advances, transtheoretical models, narrative-constructivist perspectives, and historical, political, and cultural-driven realities. His research and publications are related to counseling leadership and public policy, counseling pedagogy, counseling practice innovations, reflective clinical-educational supervision, and ethical-critical thinking practices for counselors’ education and practitioners’ professional improvement.

Dr. Vera has participated in creating diverse worldwide and regional professional counseling organizations. For example, he was one of the founding members of the International Society for Policy Research and Evaluation in School-Based Counseling (ISPRESC) and its newly chair-elected (2023-02024), the International Registry of Counselor Education Program (IRCEP worldwide), the Latin American Counseling Professional Network, and the Venezuelan Counseling Professional Associations. Similarly, professor Vera contributed to counselors’ practices quality and professional identity enhancements by helping to develop country-specific professional competency-based certification and counseling-related legislation initiatives in association with The National Board-Certified Counselor (USA) and country-based counseling organizations in Argentina, Cuba, Mexico, and Venezuela, as well as lecturing on counseling pedagogy, research, service, policies, and leadership across Latin America.
