Biography

Jean Paul Vivas is a multidisciplinary artist and educator whose practice investigates the deconstruction of familiar structures to reveal the complexities of perception. He currently serves as an adjunct professor at Barry University, where he teaches art history, 2-D design, painting, and drawing.

Vivas’s studio practice spans sculpture, installation, and painting—exemplified in his project Bittersweet Illusion—often utilizing materials such as oil and steel to create human-scaled works intended for public and outdoor contexts. His work has been exhibited across Florida and the Midwest, with recent group exhibitions at the Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery and the Andy Gato Gallery. Notably, his MFA showcase was featured at the Springfield Museum in Missouri, following his participation in curated shows at Brick City Gallery and Corolla Gallery.

His artistic research explores the tension between order and disruption, focusing on how patterns are reshaped by social, cultural, and environmental shifts. Rooted in the local surroundings of Miami, Vivas weaves personal and collective narratives into his work to illuminate quiet struggles and encourage empathy through reflection.

Throughout his professional development, Vivas has been the recipient of competitive funded appointments, serving as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Missouri State University. His background also includes significant experience as a Teaching Assistant at Miami International University of Arts & Design, focusing on ceramics and drawing. Vivas earned his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Visual Studies from Missouri State University and his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Visual Arts from Miami International University of Arts & Design. In his current role, he integrates his research interests into a curriculum that challenges students to engage with the nuanced experiences existing beneath surface-level impressions.
