Biography

Dr. Michael J. Alicea is currently an Assistant Professor with the School of Social Work at Barry University. He is a retired law enforcement officer with over 40 years of experience with both the Miami Police and Coral Gables Police Departments. He also has over 30 plus years of clinical practice experience in both the public and private sector and was a Medical/Case Management Social Worker with a regionally recognized hospital network in the South Florida area for over 20 years. His teaching experience includes 28 years as an adjunct and part time faculty member for the University of Miami, Miami Dade College, and guest lecturer at Florida International University. He has treated a wide variety of mental health concerns, with a focus on the treatment of PTSD and suicide prevention. He has more than 15 years of experience presenting at local, state, and national conferences on over 50 plus topics and subjects related to diversity, suicide awareness and prevention. He is an Honorably Discharged U.S. Coast Guard Reserve Veteran with 8 years of service (Gulf War Theater of Operations). He enjoys contributing to the professions of counseling and social work and to the community at large through volunteer work.
