Biography
www.linkedin.com/in/samuel-kan Professor Samuel Kan, CFP®, has taught at Barry University School of Law since 2017 and served as the interim Assistant Dean of Academic Success and Bar Preparation from 2018-2019. He has also served as a Visiting Professor of Law at Capital University Law School, where he taught Estates and Trusts. Prior to joining the legal academy, Professor Kan served as the Tax Counsel for the Department of Defense (DoD) Office of General Counsel at the Pentagon where he served as the principal tax advisor to DoD, representing DoD on tax and compensation issues dealing with federal and state agencies including the Internal Revenue Service, Department of Veterans Affairs, and D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue. He retired from the Office of the Secretary of Defense after serving 23 years as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army. In the Army, Professor Kan served in various positions including Deputy Staff Judge Advocate at the 2nd Infantry Division, where he supervised 18 attorneys and 30 paralegals in numerous areas of legal practice; Professor and Vice Chair of the Administrative and Civil Law Department at The U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s School, where he taught military attorneys and law school students from the University of Virginia School of Law in areas including Tax and Estate Planning; Senior Defense Counsel at the 3rd Infantry Division where he supervised a “public defender” office and tried cases ranging from armed robbery to rape; and Special Assistant United States Attorney and a Prosecutor at the 25th Infantry Division where he tried cases ranging from DWI to homicide. His awards include the Bronze Star from a combat deployment with Combined Joint Task Force-76 to Afghanistan. He is a member of the Bars of Florida, Texas, the United States Court of Federal Claims, and the United States Supreme Court. He is also a Certified Financial Planner.
