Biography

Yxiam Toledo, DNP, APRN, FNP-C is an Assistant Professor of Nursing in the School of Nursing within the College of Health Professions and Medical Sciences at Barry University. A member of the Barry University faculty for more than five years, she has served in numerous academic and governance leadership roles, including Chair of Undergraduate Faculty Affairs, and as a member of the University Technology Advisory Committee, Program Evaluation Committee, Curriculum Committee, and CHW Curriculum & Policy Committee.

Dr. Toledo’s academic and professional expertise spans advanced practice nursing, nursing education, pediatrics, oncology, palliative care, neonatology, and mother-baby care. She holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice and a Master of Science in Nursing and is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner. With more than 30 years of clinical experience and over 20 years in nursing education, her work is grounded in evidence-based practice, ethical decision-making, and service to diverse and underserved populations. She has taught across undergraduate and graduate programs, including BSN, MSN, DNP, and FNP tracks, and remains actively engaged in clinical practice and community outreach.

Central to Dr. Toledo’s teaching philosophy is the belief that nursing education should promote truth, compassion, service, and respect for human dignity, consistent with Barry University’s Dominican values. She emphasizes intentionally designed learning experiences that integrate theory, clinical reasoning, reflection, and technology to cultivate critical thinking, cultural humility, professional integrity, and lifelong learning. Bilingual in English and Spanish, Dr. Toledo is committed to inclusive education and to preparing nurses who are ethically grounded, socially responsible, and equipped to advance health equity in their communities.
