Transfer Procedures (F-1)

How to Transfer to Another U.S. School

  • Before you can transfer from Barry University to another U.S. institution, you must first receive an official acceptance letter from the new school.

Once you’ve been admitted, notify Barry University’s Office of International Student Services (ISS) of your intent to transfer. This ensures your SEVIS record is properly released and transferred.

  • To be eligible for a school transfer, you must:

    • Be enrolled full-time or on authorized annual vacation or participating in an approved Optional Practical Training (OPT) program.
    • Remain in valid F-1 or J-1 status with USCIS.

If you are not currently in status, contact ISS immediately for guidance on applying for Reinstatement with USCIS.

  • To transfer your SEVIS record from Barry University, you must:

    1. Apply and be accepted to your new school.
    2. Make an appointment with an International Student Advisor in the ISS office.
    3. Provide your Letter of Acceptance from the new institution.
    4. Submit your new school’s Transfer Form (top portion completed) to ISS.
    5. ISS will complete the SEVIS transfer and send documentation to your new school.

Important: It is the student’s responsibility to confirm that all documentation has been received by the new institution.

  • You must begin classes at your new institution during the next available academic term following your departure from Barry University, or after your annual vacation or completion of OPT.

Once the transfer is finalized, obtain a new “Initial I-20” from your new school and keep it for your records.

If You Plan to Leave the U.S. Before Enrolling

If you plan to leave the United States after leaving Barry University and before enrolling at your new school, the transfer process will differ depending on your visa status:

A. If your visa is still valid: Bring your new I-20 when you re-enter the U.S. and present it to the Customs and Border Protection officer at your port of entry.

B. If your visa has expired: Take your new I-20, proof of financial support, and documentation of ties to your home country to a U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your home country to apply for a new F-1 visa before returning.
