Planning travel outside the United States while studying at Barry University? If you hold an F-1 or J-1 visa, there are important travel and re-entry requirements you must meet to return smoothly and maintain your status.
Pre-Travel Checklist
Before you depart the U.S., confirm the following:
- Your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned return date.
- Your U.S. visa stamp is valid. If it has expired, you must apply for a new visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate before you re-enter the U.S.
- You carry your current and valid Form I-20 (for F-1 students) or DS-2019 (for J-1 students) with a recent travel endorsement (travel signature) from the ISS office.
- If you are participating in Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Curricular Practical Training (CPT), bring your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) and a current employer letter confirming your job, role and dates.
Re-Entry Tips & Maintaining Your Status
When returning to the U.S., be prepared to show immigration officials that you are still a full-time student (or eligible for your program), that you intend to continue your course of study at Barry University, and that you have the proper documentation. If any requirement above isn’t met, your re-entry could be delayed or denied.
Keep a copy of all travel-related documents in your personal records and stay in communication with the ISS office for support with any questions or special situations (such as longer travel or program changes).
