Empowering Students for SuccessBy Dr. Shaunie Wall Marshall

In higher education, support is often the difference between flashes of potential and lives changed. At Barry University, the Center for Academic Success and Advising (CASA) embodies that difference.

CASA stands as a cornerstone of student achievement, combining academic advising, success coaching, career readiness, and individualized academic support into a single, powerful hub. Through the Glenn Hubert Learning Center’s Writing, Reading, and Math Labs, as well as workshops on study strategies and test taking, CASA equips students with the skills and confidence to excel. It also houses the University Testing Center, ensuring accurate placement and seamless course progression, and offers extensive in-person and remote tutoring hours staffed by full-time professionals and part-time tutors. CASA offers comprehensive mentoring and personalized learning plans that enable students to set goals, develop strong academic habits, and successfully transition into university life. This integrated approach to success throughout a student’s Barry journey reflects our mission to prepare resilient, ethical, and socially engaged graduates.

What CASA Does

From the moment students step on campus, CASA is there.

CASA Services

  • 1

    Advising & Academic Success Coaching

CASA serves as the home for academic advising and success coaching. Every new undergraduate student comes to Barry and immediately connects with their personal coach, who serves as their academic advocate throughout their degree plan. Coaches work closely with students to help them plan their academic path, set goals, and navigate the transition into university life.

Customized Academic Support & Learning Plans

Every student is unique. CASA develops individualized plans tailored to each student’s strengths and areas for growth. Whether it’s overcoming gaps in foundational skills or building stronger habits, CASA designs support tailored to each need.

    Glenn Hubert Learning Center

Under CASA’s umbrella, the Glenn Hubert Learning Center offers tutoring in reading, writing, math, sciences, learning strategies, test-taking skills, and analytical thinking. Gateway courses in several majors are supported through their peer tutoring program. Students can receive help in one-on-one sessions, walk-in or appointment sessions, or via remote access. Workshops and seminars reinforce academic skills, such as test preparation, study strategies, and reading comprehension.

  • 4

    Testing and Placement Services

CASA also houses the University Testing Center, which handles placement and challenge testing in key areas (English, Math, Reading, Foreign Languages, etc.). Ensuring students are in courses that are appropriate to their preparation helps avoid downstream struggles.

CASA Staff and Students

Why CASA Makes a Difference

CASA’s impact isn’t just in the quantity of services; it’s in the transformation of the student experience and outcomes. Some of what makes CASA especially impressive:

  • Holistic Support

CASA isn’t focused on the transactional. CASA’s unique personalized and proactive approach to curriculum and programming combines advising, coaching, and academic advocacy. Students benefit from mentoring, goal setting, and the professional relationships they are building with success coaches.

  • Accessibility & Flexibility

All students meet 1:1 with their coach every 2-3 weeks for the entire academic year. Services are available both in person and remotely (e.g., tutoring via Microsoft Teams). Multiple schedules (even nights) are offered to reach students with different time constraints.

  • Focus on the Student's Entire Journey

Students are connected with their success coach from day one and engage with CASA programming throughout the various stages of their college career. Focusing on college transition, skill-building, and self-discovery in the first year, and then progressing to career readiness and academic department engagement in year two, as well as supplemental degree plan programming and career preparation in their junior and senior years, students are well-positioned to be successful academically and engage in opportunities that prepare them for the post-graduation world.

Putting Students First:

Real Outcomes & Different Stories

Every service CASA offers is designed to shape real student lives. At the center of each student’s network of support is CASA. Students consistently report gaining stronger confidence when stepping into challenging courses, experiencing less stress by understanding expectations early, and knowing help is available. They build their self-advocacy, communication, and reflective skills while sharpening their writing and analytical thinking through workshops and individualized feedback. Students make consistent academic progress thanks to biweekly success coach check-ins and tailored success plans. The depth of staff expertise, extended hours, and remote-access options demonstrate one thing clearly: Barry University is committed to student success!

CASA in Context:

Enhancing Barry's Mission

Barry University describes itself as committed to preparing students not only with knowledge but with resilience, ethical engagement, and social awareness. CASA amplifies that mission by giving students tools—not just to get grades—but to think independently, communicate effectively, and approach challenges with confidence. Through advising, tutoring, coaching, and academic advocacy, CASA helps bridge the gaps that often exist for first-generation students, those for whom English isn’t a first language, or students entering with varying levels of preparation.
