Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jose L. Dotres MS ‘88

At the age of five, Dr. Jose L. Dotres MS ’88, arrived in Miami as an immigrant boy with humble beginnings. Enrolled as an English Language Learner in Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), he graduated from high school and began a lifelong career serving the same system that welcomed him as a child. Today, Dr. Dotres is Superintendent of M-DCPS, the nation’s third-largest school district, leading over 40,000 employees and 300,000 students.

From Barry University to Leaderdhip

Dr. Dotres credits Barry University with helping set the foundation for his career. “It was at Barry, through the master’s program in reading, that I transitioned from the business world into education,” he recalls. Mentors such as Sister Maria Sienna and Dr. Ann Murphy guided him toward teaching, instilling the conviction that literacy is foundational to student success.“The rigorous training at Barry prepared me to foster a love of reading among my first graders and later mentor other educators as a reading coach.” Barry is also central to his family story. His wife, Maribel, and daughter both earned their master’s degrees there. “For us, Barry has been more than an academic institution. It nurtured our growth, strengthened our values, and reinforced our shared commitment to education,” he explains.

Career of Service and Vision

Over the years, Dr. Dotres has held nearly every role in education: teacher, reading coach, principal, district administrator, regional director, chief academic officer, chief capital officer, deputy superintendent, and now superintendent. Yet one role stands out most. “My time as a principal had the greatest impact. Leading a school taught me the importance of culture where students, staff, and families feel supported and inspired.” Teaching the whole child and ensuring optimal learning conditions remain at the core of his philosophy. Balancing innovation with pressing challenges such as teacher retention, he emphasizes a dual focus on people and systems. “We invest in professional development, mentorship, and clear pathways for educators, while also expanding innovative programs like advanced academics, career and technical education, AI integration, and mental health supports,” he notes.

“THE RIGOROUS TRAINING AT BARRY PREPARED ME TO FOSTER A LOVE OF READING AMONG MY FIRST GRADERS AND LATER MENTOR OTHER EDUCATORS AS A READING COACH.”

These efforts align with workforce priorities identified by the Miami-Dade Beacon Council, including technology, finance, aviation and aerospace, and trade and logistics. “We want to equip students not only for graduation but for meaningful careers,” Dr. Dotres says.

Mentors and Inspiration

Throughout his journey, mentors shaped his leadership. At Barry, Sister Maria Sienna and Dr. Ann Murphy emphasized the importance of literacy and the joy of learning. In the community, leaders such as Perla Tabares Hantman, Mari Tere Rojas, Dr. Steve Gallon III, Lourdes Gimenez, Dr. Marcos Moran, and Robert Kalinsky challenged him to reflect, analyze, and grow. “Thought partners are critical in leadership. They push you to consider different perspectives, test assumptions, and refine strategies.” One Barry memory remains especially formative: reading over 75 children’s books as part of the program. “It showed me that education is not just about teaching skills. It is about igniting curiosity and nurturing potential. That lesson still inspires how I lead today.”

learning a new language and adjusting to a new environment,” he shares. Guided by educator Rita Pierson’s words, 'Every child deserves a champion,' he strives to ensure that all students have the support and opportunities they need. Despite opportunities elsewhere, Dr. Dotres chose to remain in Miami. “This is the community that welcomed me, the district where I have spent nearly my entire professional life. I see the potential of our students and families every day. When given the chance to lead, there was no question in my mind. This is where I wanted to serve.”

“MY TIME AS A PRINCIPAL HAD THE GREATEST IMPACT. LEADING A SCHOOL TAUGHT ME THE IMPORTANCE OF CULTURE WHERE STUDENTS, STAFF, AND FAMILIES FEEL SUPPORTED AND INSPIRED.”

Looking Ahead

Dr. Dotres envisions M-DCPS as both a district of choice for families and an employer of choice for educators. That vision includes a seamless continuum of learning from early childhood through postsecondary education, diverse programs to meet every student’s interests, and a workplace where growth and collaboration are celebrated. “For me, legacy is about impact, not titles. It is the programs we built, the cultures we strengthened, the opportunities we created for students, and the support we gave to teachers and families.”
