A Pioneering Healthcare Visionary

Reflecting the American Dream Through Philanthropy and ServiceBy Alyssa Veronica Chaves

Dr. Benjamín León Jr., L.H.D. (h.c.) ’25, founder and chairman of Leon Medical Centers and Leon Health HMO, is a pioneering healthcare visionary and philanthropist whose life reflects the American Dream.

Arriving in the United States from Cuba in 1961 at the age of 16 with only five dollars, he built a career that has transformed senior healthcare in Miami-Dade County for over five decades.

Under his leadership, Leon Medical Centers has become one of the nation’s most respected healthcare institutions, following a family legacy that helped secure Florida’s first HMO license in 1973. He later guided the successful sale of Leon Medical Centers’ Health Plans while continuing to expand his own centers and launch Leon Health in 2022, a Medicare Advantage plan tailored to the unique needs of the Leon Medical Centers community.
