Championing Greatness: Mr. Harvey Willensky and BARRY Women’s Tennis Legacy

By Dr. Shaunie Wall Marshall

Few collegiate programs can rival the dominance of Barry University’s women’s tennis team. With nine

NCAA National Championships, the Buccaneers have built a dynasty defined by grit, precision, and passion. At the heart of that legacy stands Mr. Harvey Willensky, a loyal friend of the University whose steadfast support has strengthened the program and inspired generations of student-athletes.

More than a fan, Mr. Willensky has been a mentor, advocate, and champion of Barry’s mission. His belief in Barry’s mission and in the power of athletics to shape lives has propelled the women’s tennis program to the highest levels of success. His deep commitment to Barry's student-athletes is evident in his generosity to support the new tennis scoreboard now standing at the Buccaneer courts. More than just a practical addition, the scoreboard is a lasting symbol of his pride in the program, his commitment to enhancing the student-athlete experience, and a celebration of the legacy of championship success.

“Harvey believes in people first,” notes Coach Avi Kigel. “Our athletes see him not only as a supporter of the program, but as someone who genuinely cares about their journey both on and off the court.”

That care reflects the spirit of Barry’s women’s tennis program, where success is measured not only in trophies but also in academic achievement, teamwork, and personal growth. With players from around the globe,

the Buccaneers represent a diverse group of cultures and experiences united by a shared pursuit of excellence. Their nine national titles are the product of a winning culture, nurtured by discipline, resilience, and the encouragement of supporters like Harvey and Marjorie Willensky. “Harvey’s support reminds us that success isn’t measured only by trophies,” Coach Avi adds. “It’s about the community, the friendships, and the belief that we can achieve anything together.”

As Barry women’s tennis team looks towards its next chapter, one thing is clear: the foundation built by coaches, athletes, and champions like Mr. Willensky will keep the Buccaneers poised for continued success, whether it is on the court, in the classroom, or in life.
