The Barry Urban Garden is a community agriculture initiative that provides organic produce to low-income residents of Miami neighborhoods that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has categorized as urban food deserts. Campus and community members work together to implement projects within the framework of the initiative, which offers experiential learning opportunities to students and engaged scholarship opportunities to faculty. The BUG is based on the principles and practice of permaculture, a system that emphasizes sustainability, integration, and cooperation.
