Food Pantry Plus

In partnership with Feeding South Florida, Ministry & Community Outreach operates a Food Pantry out of Thompson 228. During the academic year, the Food Pantry is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1 to 4 PM. Follow us on social media to stay up to date with any changes in operation! The Food Pantry provides fresh, nutritious food and essential household items FREE OF CHARGE for Barry University students and staff. You do not need to be food insecure to access the Pantry! Our goal is to de-stigmatize food insecurity and freely nourish the campus community. If you are simply looking for a snack or drink, or ingredients for your next recipe, come visit the Food Pantry!

We are always in need of committed students to serve in the Food Pantry. Student helpers help receive, sort, prepare, and operate the pantry for service. Those serving in the food pantry can receive experiential-learning credit and also gain invaluable experience managing a retail operation. Most importantly, you care for your neighbors and offer radical hospitality, all while keeping the campus community nourished. For more information, contact Kativon Makary at kmakary@barry.edu.

You can also sign up for Food Pantry shifts on GivePulse. Please log in with your Barry username and password and search for Barry Food Pantry as you explore opportunities.

Bucky’s Boutique

Next to the Food Pantry, MCO operates Bucky’s Boutique! A welcoming, open space for you to find your next fresh fit! Located in Thompson 227, students and staff are welcome to visit Thursdays and Fridays from 1 to 4 PM to shop for FREE.

The inspiration for Bucky’s Boutique began with one passionate Barry student who recognized the negative impacts of fast fashion and aimed to reduce textile waste. From there, the mission was simple but powerful: fight textile waste, support sustainability, and empower students to dress with confidence. Thanks to their vision and the support of the Barry community, that dream is now a reality. Today, Bucky’s Boutique features a thoughtfully curated selection of professional attire and trendy thrifted pieces.

You can be a part of our ministry to care for our neighbors, care for our environment, and fight unethical purchasing and production! We are always looking for students who want to be leaders and advocates for the most marginalized. You can sign up to serve with us on GivePulse or connect with Kativon Makary for more ways you can help.

Environmental Leadership Experience & the Barry Urban Garden (BUG)

The Environmental Leadership Experience (ELE) is a 7-day experiential opportunity for eight Barry University students to learn about sustainable agricultural ecosystems in Adrian, Michigan. Through the lens of environmental stewardship, this once-a-year opportunity offers hands-on activities at the Adrian Dominican Motherhouse Permaculture site, with service and day trips to local points of interest. After their time in Michigan, students selected to participate in this summer experience are expected to implement a sustainability initiative together, here at Barry University.

Be on the lookout for the upcoming trip details and the link to apply! You can follow us on social media or contact Rob Roa rroa@barry.edu for more information.

Additionally, the students who visit Adrian, Michigan also support the Barry Urban Garden, lovingly called the BUG. The BUG was born from students witnessing the work of the Adrian Dominican Sisters in Michigan to build a sustainable and organic food system. As a reflection of the Motherhouse gardens, the BUG is an opportunity to champion food sovereignty, and promote the principles and practice of permaculture, emphasizing sustainability, integration, and cooperation. Most importantly, the BUG is our connection to the Motherhouse as we are all called to steward the earth and care for creation.

For more information about the BUG please contact Rob Roa.
