Days of Service

Throughout the academic year, BarryU comes together for a morning of service and reflection with our community partners across South Florida. This tradition brings together student clubs, residence halls, friends, athletic teams, and more to serve in our local community. Days of Service hours fulfill your service-learning requirement for classes as well.

Look out for dates for each Day of Service and contact Gabe Bouani at gbouani@barry.edu to get involved or learn more. Faculty is also encouraged to support students participating in Days of Service.

We traditionally organize:

  • Peace Week Day of Service (September)
  • Founders Day of Service (November)
  • Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service (January)
  • Earth Week Day of Service – Sustainability Saturday (April)

Campus Democracy Project

A great way to serve your community to get involved with civic affairs! The Campus Democracy Project at Barry University engages students to lean into the Catholic Social Teaching that teaches “responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation.”
The CDP is a University-wide committee that coordinates nonpartisan initiatives including voter registration, education, and mobilization. If you are interested in serving with CDP or want to learn more about civic service, please contact Gabe Bouani

Barry Service Corps

True to the Adrian Dominican charism and inspired by BarryU’s core commitments, student servant-leaders apply to the Barry Service Corps to engage with some of the world’s deepest needs, right in our own neighborhood of Miami. Informed by rich Catholic Social Teaching, the BSC addresses immediate needs (service) and root causes (justice) in the community.

Selected BSC Members participate in faith formation and leadership development through the lens of service and justice. Each member is matched with a local community partner and begins service in the Fall Semester.

BSC members commit nine hours per week at their sites and participate in one hour of theological reflection per week. Students are compensated with a generous stipend and may be eligible for experiential-learning credits.

Wondering if you should apply?

If you are an undergraduate student:

  • Who is interested in faith and social justice;
  • Who is passionate about Catholic Social Teaching;
  • Who wants to develop and strengthen leadership skills;
  • Who works hard to honor commitments;
  • Who can dedicate 10 hours a week to all of the above;

Then this program is for you. Connect with Gabe Bouani at gbouani@barry.edu, or visit us in Thompson 211 to learn more. Applications open in January!

Some of our past community partners include People Acting in Community Together (PACT), Coalition of Immokalee Workers, Engage Miami, and so many more!
