Barry University Alumni Honored as Fellows in the American Academy of Nursing

On October 18, 2025, four distinguished Barry University School of Nursing alumni were inducted as Fellows in the American Academy of Nursing, known as one of the most prestigious honors in the field. This recognition celebrates their remarkable leadership, scholarship, and contributions to advancing the nursing profession.

The newly inducted Fellows include:

  • Dr. Tony Umadhay, Immediate Past Dean of the School of Nursing
  • Dr. Rick Garcia, Organization for Associate Degree Nursing
  • Dr. Balkys Bivins, Monumental Health Partners
  • Dr. Juan M. Gonzalez, University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies

Their achievement marks both a proud moment for each honoree and for Barry University as a whole. The distinction reflects the School of Nursing’s commitment to developing leaders who make a meaningful impact on healthcare, education, and the communities they serve.

The American Academy of Nursing is an honorific society and policy organization comprised of more than 3,000 of the most accomplished leaders in nursing. Fellows represent elected officials, hospital executives, researchers, policy experts, academic leaders and much more. The Academy functions as a respected policy think tank, focused on improving health care and disseminating nursing knowledge for change.

Fellows actively engage in the Academy’s mission by joining expert panels, advising on policy, serving in leadership roles, and engaging in philanthropic efforts. With members representing all 50 states, U.S. territories, and more than 55 countries, the Academy exemplifies the global reach and influence of nursing leadership.
