Nursing Scores Largest LPWF Scholarship in History

Aug 31, 2022

$184,000 Scholarship - Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation has been a significant source of support for Barry University School of Nursing students for 32 years, and this year they have awarded us our largest scholarship ever: $184,000! This amounts to 32 scholarships for the 2022-23-year, awarded to female, Christian students from nine southern states. We are proud to support our nursing students.

Since 2002, Barry University has awarded 1,183 Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation Scholarships. This year’s award of $184,000 from the Foundation represents their largest donation to Barry University and comes at a significant time in Barry history.

While working through the challenges the Covid-19 pandemic presented, students on average report an annual shortfall of $2,500. Any unexpected financial emergencies can derail a student’s academic aspirations. Within students who cannot persist, 80% cite financial reasons. Degrees remain uncompleted because they cannot afford it. It is for these reasons that scholarships such as these are so impactful to the university community.

Dean Tony Umadhay expresses his gratitude to the Foundation: “On behalf of the School of Nursing, I am so grateful to the Trustees of the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation for this generous gift. With rising prices, rising temperatures, and rising tensions, now more than ever, our Barry students need this support”.

It is anticipated that this year’s $184,000 gift will be distributed into 32 scholarships to be awarded for the 2022-23 academic year. The open and close dates for the scholarships are August 28 - October 2, 2022.
