Arts & Sciences Watch: “Violence, Neglect, And Well-Being During The COVID-19 Pandemic: Lessons From South Florida”

On Thursday, April 8, the Department of Sociology and Criminology presented a virtual panel discussion titled “Violence, Neglect, and Well-Being During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Lessons from South Florida.”

Panelists included expert speakers from the region. Captain Elise Dillard represented the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Special Victims Bureau (SVB). Erica Herman currently serves as the President & CEO at Voices for Children of Broward County, a non-profit organization advocating for children in foster care. And Somy Ali joined from No More Tears, which assists and empowers victims of human trafficking and domestic violence.

These key stakeholders supplemented the expertise of Barry faculty and staff, who hosted the event.

Past research into times of crisis indicates that they can disrupt traditional social arrangements and pave the way toward the transgression of norms. The panel discussed in what way and to what extent this theoretical perspective applies to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The panel discussion is available to be viewed in its entirety below.
