Student Organization Minority Association of Pre-Health Students (MAPS)

The Minority Association of Pre-Health Students (MAPS) is a multicultural pre-health organization. As a student group, MAPS serves as a pipeline and mentorship program to bridge gaps for underrepresented students who wish to enter medical school or other health-related fields. MAPS provides knowledge, skills and experience to students with aspirations of entering a health-related profession. While the primary focus of MAPS is preparation for medical school, participation in its professional development programs and community service, such as mock interviews and health fairs, can be equally beneficial to all. Established in the fall of 2011, MAPS has members from both undergraduate (biology, chemistry, nursing) and graduate (biomedical sciences) programs. Membership is open to all students who are interested in gaining clinical experience and insights into healthcare professions, regardless of their area of study.

MAPS organizes, hosts, and participates in a multitude of meaningful community and professional development opportunities each year including:

  • Annual pre-health mixer with MD, MD/MPH, DO, DPM, PA, DDS/DMD students from UM, Nova, FAU and Barry as well as admissions personnel and practicing professionals
  • Members serve as Spanish and Creole translators at community health fairs organized by UMDOCS
  • Visits from admissions personnel from various graduate and medical programs
  • Medical school application tips from MAPS alumni
  • CPR Training
  • Annual Pink Campus Day raising awareness of breast cancer statistics, detection and available treatments
  • Ongoing Campus-wide Box Tops for Education Drive with CCSI benefitting two local elementary schools
