Department of Chemistry and Physics Instrumentation

The physical sciences department provides access to state-of-the-art instrumentation to benefit the students who elect to be chemistry majors, as well as other Barry students enrolled in science courses. Recently, the department received a $383,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy for instrumentation to equip a biochemistry laboratory. Students now have access to various chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. Some of the experiments include separation and structure determination of amino acids and other biomolecules, determination of D-aspartate in the frog nervous system, kinetic studies of degradation of creatine and beta-alanine, measurements of electronic spectra of coordination complexes and many more.
