The Honors Program at Barry is designed to challenge, enrich, and prepare especially motivated students to pursue their fullest potential. By participating in a rigorous curriculum rounded out by an array of edifying and interactive events, students explore crucial issues that we face in our daily lives. Students are given the space for discussion and debate and the opportunity to learn from experts in their fields. The Office of Financial Aid can assist with determining eligibility for the Honors Program.

The Monsignor William Barry Memorial Library is located in the center of the beautiful Miami Shores campus of Barry University. The Library is named in loving memory of Monsignor William Barry, one of the founders of Barry University and an inspirational figure in the Catholic Church within the Archdiocese of Miami. The extensive Library research collections include more than 950,000 physical items, over 40,000 print and on-line journal subscriptions, and several thousand on-line books and streaming video resources.

At Barry University, you will experience a small community atmosphere where you can always rely on our administrators and faculty for advice, encouragement and personal attention. We take great pride in giving individual attention from the very beginning. We are an NCAA Division II school and a member of the Sunshine State Conference with 12 varsity teams, including men's baseball, basketball, golf, soccer and tennis; and women's basketball, golf, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. So far, we've won 24 NCAA championships, had 338 All-Americans, 413 Scholar All-Americans, and nine NCAA "Women of the Year" finalists, the most of any Division II school. Not bad at all, but we're going for more.

Program Courses Overview

Marine Biology (BS.BIOM)

Barry’s undergraduate Marine Biology degree program provides students with the opportunity to prepare for several career goals that focus on the marine environment. Possible alternatives include graduate study, teaching, and opportunities in governmental agencies, as well as various careers in research.

A major requires a minimum of 40 credits including 33 required Biology credits and at least 7 additional Biology elective credits.

Overview of BS.BIOM curriculum (total 120 credits with 40 credits in Biology)

Biology Courses Required for Marine Biology Major (33 credits):

  • BIO 110 General Biology I with lab (4 credits)
  • BIO 111 General Biology II with lab (4 credits)
  • Either: BIO 322 Botany with lab -or- BIO 216 Zoology with lab (4 credits)
  • BIO 305 Introduction to Oceanography (3 credits)
  • BIO 314 Biology of Fishes with lab (4 credits)
  • BIO 312 Ecology with lab (4 credits)
  • BIO 310 Marine Biology with lab (4 credits)
  • BIO 339 Animal Behavior (3 credits)
  • Marine Biology Capstone: BIO 474 Marine Seminar (3 credits)

Additional Biology Courses Recommended for Marine Biology major:

  • BIO 330 Cell Biology with lab (4 credits)
  • BIO 341 Genetics with lab (4 credits) -or- BIO 303 Principles of Human Genetics (3 credits)

Students must fulfill the following Bioethics or Environmental Ethics requirements:

  • THE 353 Bioethics (3 credits) -or- PHI 353 Bio-Medical Ethics (3 credits) -or- PHI 354 Environmental Ethics (3 credits)

Students must also fulfill the following co-requisites in Math, Chemistry, Physics & Ethics:

  • CHEMISTRY: CHE 111 and 112 General Chemistry I & II with labs; CHE 343 and 344 Organic Chemistry I & II with labs (16 credits)
  • MATH: MAT 211 Calculus I (4 credits)
  • PHYSICS: PHY 151 Principles of Physics -or- PHY 201 General College Physics I -or- PHY 211 University Physics I with labs (4 credits)

Recommended Biology courses and/or additional Biology electives not listed, can be used to complete the 40 credits for the major.

Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 120 credits with a cumulative average of 2.00 (C). Of the total, a minimum of 45 credits must be in courses numbered above 299. The last 30 credits and the majority of the major coursework must be completed at Barry University.

Students are required to take the Major Field Assessment Test (MFAT) in Biology.

Students will also need to complete University General Education requirements.
