Marine Biology (BS.BIOM)

Barry’s undergraduate Marine Biology degree program provides students with the opportunity to prepare for several career goals that focus on the marine environment. Possible alternatives include graduate study, teaching, and opportunities in governmental agencies, as well as various careers in research.

A major requires a minimum of 40 credits including 33 required Biology credits and at least 7 additional Biology elective credits.

Overview of BS.BIOM curriculum (total 120 credits with 40 credits in Biology)

Biology Courses Required for Marine Biology Major (33 credits):

  • General Biology I with lab (4 credits)
  • General Biology II with lab (4 credits)
  • Either: Botany with lab -or- Zoology with lab (4 credits)
  • Introduction to Oceanography (3 credits)
  • Biology of Fishes with lab (4 credits)
  • Ecology with lab (4 credits)
  • Marine Biology with lab (4 credits)
  • Animal Behavior (3 credits)
  • Marine Biology Capstone: Marine Seminar (3 credits)

Additional Biology Courses Recommended for Marine Biology major:

  • Cell Biology with lab (4 credits)
  • Genetics with lab (4 credits) -or- Principles of Human Genetics (3 credits)

Students must fulfill the following Bioethics or Environmental Ethics requirements:

  • Bioethics (3 credits) -or- Bio-Medical Ethics (3 credits) -or- Environmental Ethics (3 credits)

Students must also fulfill the following co-requisites in Math, Chemistry, Physics & Ethics:

  • CHEMISTRY: General Chemistry I & II with labs; Organic Chemistry I & II with labs (16 credits)
  • MATH:  Calculus I (4 credits)
  • PHYSICS: Principles of Physics -or- General College Physics I -or- University Physics I with labs (4 credits)

Recommended Biology courses and/or additional Biology electives not listed, can be used to complete the 40 credits for the major.

Students will also need to complete University General Education requirements.
