Pre-Dental, BS. BIOP

For students interested in Pre-Medical, Pre-Dental, Pre-Graduate (Masters/Ph.D.), Pre-Veterinary, Pre-Optometry, Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-Podiatry Programs

Overview of BS.BIOP curriculum (total 120 credits with 40 credits in Biology)

BIOLOGY CORE required courses:

  • General Biology I with lab (4 credits)
  • General Biology II with lab (4 credits)
  • Genetics; Either Principles of Human Genetics (3 credits) -or- Genetics with lab (4 credits)

At least one course from each of the 5 areas listed below:

  1. Biodiversity; examples are: Botany, Zoology, Biology of Fishes, Parasitology,
  2. Cell and Molecular Biology; examples are: Microbiology, Cell Biology, Neurobiology, Molecular Biology, Histology, Immunology
  3. Organismal Biology; examples are: Anatomy, Comparative Anatomy, Physiology, Comparative Physiology, Human Nutrition, Animal Nutrition, Embryology
  4. Ecology and Environmental Science; examples are: Environmental Sciences, Marine Biology, Ecology, Animal Behavior
  5. A Capstone Course; taken as a senior, you will present research on an interdisciplinary topic. Examples are: Evolution, Virology, Marine Biology Seminar or Senior Seminar

Student must fulfill the following Bioethics or Environmental Ethics requirements:

  • Bioethics (3 credits) -or- Bio-Medical Ethics (3 credits) -or- Environmental Ethics (3 credits)

In addition to 40 BIOLOGY credits, all Biology majors take Co-requisites in Math, Chemistry and Physics.

  • CHEMISTRY: 16 credits of Chemistry. General Chemistry I & II with labs; Organic Chemistry I and either Organic Chemistry II or Biochemistry I.
  • MATH: 9 credits of Mathematics or Calculus I.
  • PHYSICS: 8 credits of Physics with labs. Can be either General College Physics I & II -or- University Physics I & II.

Additional Biology electives not listed, can be used to complete the 40 credits for the major.

Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 120 credits with a cumulative average of 2.00 (C). Of the total, a minimum of 48 credits must be in courses numbered above 299. The last 30 credits and the majority of the major coursework must be completed at Barry University.

Students are required to take the Major Field Assessment Test (MFAT) in Biology.

Students will also need to complete University General Education requirements.
