Empowering Women: Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation Makes Impact in Nine Southeastern States

The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation primarily focuses its resources on the Lettie Pate Whitehead scholarship program, which offers scholarship grants to female students in need of financial aid at over 200 colleges, universities, and schools

Foundation Overview

In 1946, the Foundation received a charter to provide assistance and award support to need-based Christian females in nine states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

While the Foundation does have a particular interest in health education, the majority of its scholarship grants are geared towards undergraduate higher education. However, a considerable portion of the grants are allocated to support education in the fields of medical, nursing, and allied health.

How LPWF has provided aid to Barry Students

Since 2002, Barry University has awarded 1,183 Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation Scholarships. In total, 630 unique students have received the scholarship as a previous recipient who meets all required criteria is eligible to be renewed.

This scholarship represents the longest continuous scholarship for students in the School of Nursing. With a predominantly female student enrollment at Barry University (69% in FY 2021) and a nursing program with over 68 years of producing highly qualified nurses, the partnership between the Foundation and the University has been truly impactful.
