On April 3, 2025, Barry University hosted Facing Hate: Understanding, Preventing, and Addressing Antisemitism & Islamophobia, a powerful dialogue centered on education, empathy, and inclusive leadership. The program invited participants to examine the historical and contemporary roots of antisemitism and Islamophobia while deepening understanding of Jewish and Muslim traditions. Through interactive dialogue and experiential learning, attendees explored how prejudice manifests and how inclusive leadership can actively counter hate.

Facilitated by Dr. Lauren Shure, Professor of Counseling at Barry University, and Dr. Waleed Sami, Assistant Professor of Mental Health Counseling at the City College of New York, the event featured perspectives from both Jewish and Muslim communities. Participants engaged in meaningful conversation, challenged common misconceptions, and identified strategies to support and stand in solidarity with marginalized groups.

The evening concluded with a shared Kosher/Halal meal, symbolizing unity, mutual respect, and shared humanity. Breaking bread together created space for reflection and connection, reinforcing the collective commitment to confronting hate and fostering a more just and inclusive community.
