The Biology (BS) Pre-Optometry program, part of Biology’s Pre-Professional specialization, is designed to prepare students to apply to optometry schools.

Biology (BS) Pre-Optometry Course Offerings

In addition to its required courses, Barry’s Biology (BS) Pre-Optometry program offers a variety of elective courses for its majors, including but not limited to:

  • Human Nutrition
  • Neurobiology
  • Parasitology
  • Biochemistry
  • Epidemiology
  • Histology
  • Embryology

Program Overview: Pre-Professional Specialization

This major requires a minimum of 40 credits including Biology 104, 112, 216, 341 and at least one course from each of the following core areas:

  • Growth and Development (Human or Comparative Anatomy)
  • Cellular and Molecular Biology (Cell Biology or Microbiology)
  • Physiological and Biochemical Principles (Human or Comparative Physiology)
  • Environmental Biology (Ecology or Marine Biology or Environmental Science)
  • Biological Theory (Evolution or Seminar or Virology)

Students must also fulfill the following non-biological requirements:

  • Chemistry (16 semester hours)
  • Calculus (Note prerequisites)
  • Physics (8 semester hours)
  • Theology or Philosophy (Bioethics or Environmental Ethics)

Note: Students planning to teach at the secondary level should add Biology 476.
