General Information Study Biology at Barry

The Department of Biology offers the opportunity to study life at all levels. The diverse course of study helps you develop critical thinking skills as you examine scientific knowledge from various biology sub-disciplines. Through foundational coursework along with practical laboratory experience, you will develop the scientific skills and knowledge that will open the door to numerous career and graduate school opportunities.

After your undergraduate studies, you may consider continuing your education in medical, dental, veterinary, optometry, or podiatry school. Other possibilities include working with the environment in the capacities of marine biologist, wildlife biologist, or environmental health expert.     The biology program’s teaching labs have everything you need to study genetics, cell biology, anatomy, zoology, marine biology, botany, physiology, embryology, and microbiology.

    With its year‐round access to unique environments such as the Florida Everglades and the only living reefs in the continental United States, you will have additional opportunities for research and observation.

    Faculty conduct research in a wide range of areas — everything from virology and neurodevelopment to fish behavior and seagrass beds. They publish in scientific journals and present at conferences — frequently attending with student authors.

Academics Find the Biology Program that Excites You

As an undergraduate, your future can take shape with our three different biology degree programs to explore. The Bachelor of Science in General Biology degree (BS.BIOT) is a traditional degree that will help you pursue a wide variety of biology-related careers.

The Bachelor of Science Pre-Professional degree (BS.BIOP) will prepare you to apply to medical and health professional schools to pursue a career as a doctor, dentist, optometrist, physical therapist, veterinarian, or professional career of your dreams.

The third-degree option is the Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology degree (BS.BIOM). If you are passionate about the various life forms that live in our ocean’s depths, our program gives you plenty of hands-on experience. Located near diverse marine ecosystems, Barry will allow you to follow your interests as deep as they go. For whatever degree program you choose, our labs and knowledgeable faculty will guide you to accomplishing your dreams.

These scholarships honor the memory of two trailblazing Adrian Dominican Sisters who dedicated their lives to the mission of the university and to educating generations of aspiring biologists, medical professionals, and biology educators.
