Department of English and Foreign Languages Certificate in Translation and Interpretation

Individuals wishing to study only Translation and Interpretation without having to complete other university requirements may enroll as a non-degree seeking student. They will have the option of earning a Certificate in Translation and Interpretation by successfully completing the following courses. Students must choose a minimum of 24 credits.

To undertake this certificate program, students must demonstrate a minimum proficiency in Spanish and English at the intermediate-high level. Proficiency will be determined by examination. A minimum grade of C is required in all courses.

Required Courses

  • Analysis of English grammatical structures. Emphasis on modern descriptive analysis. Prerequisite: ENG 112 or ENG 210

  • This course focuses on developing skills for complex reading and systematic analysis of different kinds of texts, including literary and nonliterary written texts and audiovisual materials. Prerequisite: SPA 204 or equivalent or according to placement test.

  • This course aims to improve students' Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills through major readings and the production of a personal portfolio composed of different written texts. Prerequisite: SPA 204 or equivalent or according to placement test.

  • This course focuses on basic principles of translation. Techniques and resources for professional translation. Prerequisite: SPA 204 or equivalent or according to placement test.

  • This course focuses on basic principles of interpretation. Techniques and resources for professional interpretation. Prerequisite: SPA 204 or equivalent or according to placement test.

  • Advanced methods and tools for professional translating. Prerequisite: SPA 325 or permission of instructor.

  • Advanced methods and tools for professional interpreting. Prerequisite: SPA 326 or permission of instructor

Recommended courses

  • Practical experience within a professional setting. Prerequisite: Senior Status (90+ credits), 2.5 overall GPA.
