About the Program Exercise Physiology, BS

Barry's University Bachelor of Science of Exercise Physiology degree is designed as a preparatory program for graduate or professional school. The degree in Exercise Physiology is a science-based program of study that examines the effects of exercise and physical activity on preventing chronic diseases, improving of physical and mental health & well-being, and optimizing sport performance. A degree in Exercise Physiology can prepare graduates for a broad range of careers in medicine, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, chiropractic, physician assistant, physical therapy, dentistry, pharmacy, occupational therapy, exercise physiology, and strength and conditioning.

The undergraduate program includes courses in science, anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and psychology, with hands-on laboratories in exercise physiology, biomechanics, and sport psychology. Students will also complete up to 480-hours of clinical or research internship with emphasis in health and/or fitness. These activities also provide leadership opportunities. 

This degree program will prepare the new era professionals to face the myriad of career opportunities successfully.

Exercise Physiology in one the fastest growing career areas in the country with strong links to health and fitness in both public and private sectors. Related research has shown that more businesses and industries than ever are utilizing exercise as a mean to increase the work efficiency and reduce medical costs and absenteeism. General population wellness and fitness awareness is at an all-time high. Business and industry, hospitals and rehabilitation centers, fitness assessment clinics, fitness clubs, wellness programs, schools utilize exercise physiology to serve the wellness needs of their constituencies.

Barry University's undergraduate Exercise Physiology program is designed to open doors to your professional career.

  • You will gain experience in our Human Performance Lab, and Motion Analysis Center Lab as well as gaining the solid academic background you need. The program is designed to help you develop the real-world skills that you need to succeed in this field.

With direction from your advisor, you will choose the courses, extracurricular activities, and national endorsement exam ACSM exam and NSCA exam that fit the professional requirements for your future career.

You might work with a high school or college team; a fitness center affiliated with a local hospital; a sport performance enhancement center; a corporate wellness program; or work with a faculty member performing cutting edge research. You'll work with and assist people from a variety of cultures, offering you a wealth of experience you may not find elsewhere in the U.S. And you'll get this experience in a subtropical climate that you can enjoy year-round.

Barry's sport and Exercise Physiology faculty members possess strong academic and professional credentials, as well as experience in the field. They are available to answer your questions, to guide your progress toward completion of your Exercise Physiology degree, and to help as you set up a professional network.

Program Requirements

The Exercise Physiology program requires 39 credit hours (beyond the SES core of 22 hours) which are specific to the Exercise Physiology major and which prepare students to attempt professional certification examinations. A student majoring in Exercise Physiology must take the ACSM Health/Fitness Specialist or the NSCA Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification examination prior to graduation. Students who want to prepare to allied health career have the opportunity to choose a concentration in Rehabilitation Sciences. The minimum grade of C is required in all major, SES core, and co-requisite courses.

  • By the end of the fourth semester of study, Exercise Physiology (EXP) student majors must have earned at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA. Students not meeting or maintaining the program cumulative GPA requirement will be notified and given one additional semester to meet or exceed the minimum cumulative GPA. If at the end of the fourth semester of study the student still has not earned the required program cumulative GPA, they will be dismissed from the major.

  • Students must pass SES-361 Exercise Physiology and SES-361L Lab, and SES-370 Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription and SES-370L Lab, with a C or better and show proof of current CPR/AED certification prior to being admitted to SES-486 Practicum. Practicum in Exercise Physiology requires at least six hours per week of guided field experience in laboratory testing and research, exercise leadership, exercise prescription and programming, and fitness assessment.     SES-499 (Internship in Exercise Physiology) is a field experience in a hospital-based wellness or cardiac rehabilitation program, a corporate or community fitness center, or sports training facility. Completion of SES-486 is required in order to receive approval from the Internship Coordinator and Program Director to enroll in SES-499. (See other requirements under course descriptions.) SES 499: Internship meets the integrative experience requirement for graduation.

  • A variety of assessment and evaluation methods are utilized to effectively measure student learning outcomes. These methods are chosen to align with course objectives and offer a comprehensive evaluation of students' knowledge, skills, and competencies. Key assessment methods include examinations covering various question formats, assignments, and projects encouraging real-world application, active class participation fostering engagement and comprehension, quizzes for monitoring progress, online assessments providing flexibility, peer and self-assessment promoting reflective learning, and clear rubrics ensuring transparency and consistency. Through this multifaceted approach, we strive to create a dynamic learning environment that supports student success and academic excellence while continuously adapting to meet evolving needs and standards.

Experiential Learning Internships

In this exciting portion of the program, you will have the opportunity to integrate knowledge you have learned during course work and through on-campus experiences in actual practice situations. 

The 240-hour Exercise Physiology internship gives you the opportunity to have an in-depth field experience in a hospital-based wellness or cardiac rehabilitation program, a corporate fitness center, or other off-campus fitness/exercise facility.

You can apply to Barry whenever it’s convenient for you. We accept applications on a rolling basis, but it’s always better to apply sooner than later. You’re considered a transfer applicant when you have at least 12 college level credits from a regionally accredited college or university. Remember, you may have to apply separately to specific programs, so please review the academic requirements for your intended major.
