Our Students and Graduates
Criminology has positively impacted my experience at BarryU. Professors surpassed my expectations by teaching course material in a manner that is enjoyable and interactive. The environment promoted within classrooms is extended and encouraged to be applied to daily living. I found myself immersed in opportunities I never would have believed to be a part of such as the annual Bride's Walk and PRIDE rally. I have evolved into a diligent Buccaneer who now has the passion to connect with others, the courage to stand up for human rights, and the knowledge to get me through every step on my journey towards a brighter future.
Class of 2020
While being a double major, the Criminology program at Barry University has offered me many opportunities to get real world experiences in and out of the classroom. I have had the opportunity to complete two rides along with officers, I have visited the FBI building and two correction facilities, completed an internship in the Biometric Identification Unit at Broward County’s Main Jail, became a published author in an encyclopedia and there have been multiple guest speakers during class time. The professors are very helpful and approachable if you have any questions or just want to speak to them about different topics in Criminology. I enjoy the opportunities that the Criminology program has given me the most in my experience here at Barry University.
Double Major: Chemistry and Criminology, Class of 2020
The time I spent at Barry University was the most influential and transformational period in my life. My experience there has given me the possibility to advance with my education and pursue a Doctoral degree in Criminal Justice. It opened doors for me in higher circles that I never even thought were an option. During my time there, I came across and developed meaningful and appreciated relationships with professors who genuinely cared for my success and well-being. Without their support and guidance, I wouldn't be as successful as I am today. The education and knowledge that I acquired at Barry University has changed my life and I will be forever grateful to the Department of Sociology and Criminology for my future successes and accomplishments.
Class of 2015
Barry University's Criminology program has allotted me many opportunities to succeed and progress in my field. Taking classes such as Drugs & Society with Dr. Perez and International Perspectives on Criminology with Dr. Finley. These classes, along with many others have allowed me to understand the sociological perspectives of crime. Being able to understand why certain acts or drug uses are illegal, and the effects that nurture, labeling, and other societal effects have on the human mind leading to criminality are astonishing. Working with Dr. Finley I was able to become a published writer on the Bloods & Crips in her encyclopedia "Gangland: An Encyclopedia of Gang Life from Cradle to Grave". Being a criminology major here at Barry University you will work with professors that have Ph.D.'s in an intimate setting to truly understand why people commit a crime and the reasons behind the laws that are made
Class of 2019
The Criminology department at Barry University has offered me amazing opportunities to connect with real justice departments and the availability of becoming an activist. For example being able to participate in The College Brides Walk and bring awareness to domestic violence alongside Dr. Finley. Dr. Finley and Dr. Perez have both been very influential professors when it came to my classes. Theories of Deviance with Dr. Perez was one of my favorite classes because I could learn through a professor as passionate about the subject as I am."
