Summer Science Research Program (SSRP)

Barry University’s Summer Science Research Program (SSRP) is a comprehensive three-week research program that immerses rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors in life science research while exposing them to the college environment. The program, at no cost to high school students in Broward and Miami-Dade counties, features lectures and workshops on college life and preparation; an authentic inquiry-based science project; state-of-the-art molecular biology methodology; university-style interactive lectures and debates; and science communication. Research culminates in an oral formal presentation by each participant during the Awards Ceremony.

PROGRAM DATES: June 15 - July 2, 2015
PROGRAM TIME: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00pm

“SSRP was one of the best summer programs that I did while in high school. It introduced me to research techniques (gel electrophoresis and Polymerase chain reaction) that I have had to perform in my undergraduate career. Being exposed to them at such an early point in time gave me a crucial skill set to draw from. My cohort in the program proved beneficial, as well. I sincerely enjoyed being around a group of like-minded high school students for the summer. Dr. Redway and the other facilitators were fantastic—SSRP is a terrific program!”

--Naomi Fields, 2010 SSRP participant; junior at Williams College majoring in chemistry

“The SSRP program gave me a sense of college expectations, and it motivated me to expand my knowledge in science at school. It was also very encouraging to have been able to use all of the equipment provided to us in order to have the full experience at no cost.”

--Ana Correa, 2010 SSRP participant; sophomore at Florida International University majoring in advertising and public relations

“This program was beyond fantastic; it took all the thoughts and imagination I had about what a lab should be like and made it tangible. At the time I participated in the program, I was a sophomore in high school. It was an entirely new experience for me. I was able to get a sneak peak of what college life was like and was able to be a part of an experiment conducted by wonderful professors and interns … Due to the SSRP program, I was very comfortable in the lab environment and was able to apply what I learned from the program. I feel as though the program gave me a definite advantage compared to others my age and at my grade level. I highly recommend the program to anyone, even students not pursuing a science degree.”

--Edwin Robledo, 2010 SSRP participant; sophomore at Florida International University majoring in biomedical engineering

“Last summer, I was granted the opportunity to participate in the University of Miami's prestigious Miami Model program. The chances of my being accepted without having Barry University's Summer Science Research Program under my belt were slim. SSRP has helped me successfully compete against some of the state's – and one day, some of the nation's – brightest young scientists. The knowledge and experience of having worked with GMOs, state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and brilliant minds, such as Dr. Redway, are invaluable. Moreover, I have formed friendships with fellow participants that I will carry with me through my years.”

--Allison Bermudez (2010 Participant)
