  • Our Programs

Barry University offers two main study abroad pathways: consortium programs (via CCIS) and Language and Cultural Immersion programs.

    Consortium Programs – Semester Long

Barry University partners with College Consortium for International Studies (CCIS) to provide semester, summer, and year-long programs at partner universities in dozens of countries. Students benefit from on-site support through CCIS, which offers 90+ programs across 28 countries.

Choose these consortium programs for structured immersion, seamless credit transfers, and a curriculum you can tailor to your major. These are ideal if you are looking to experience academic depth paired with professional guidance, gain global experience tailored to your major and goals, with varying cost varying by duration and location.

This option immerses you in the full student experience, allowing you to live and study like a local in your host country.

Note: Applications usually require a deposit. The application deadlines occur several months before the program begins. Fall study abroad programs typically have a deadline around March, while Spring programs usually have a deadline around October of the previous year. Please contact Study Abroad well before the deadlines to ensure application materials, travel documents, costs, and academic approvals are completed on time.

Language and Cultural Immersion Programs – Short-Term

Barry University faculty and staff lead short-term courses abroad to immerse students in a particular field of study, often between 1-4 weeks during breaks or summer. With options tailored to specific majors and/or non-credit programs, these trips are open to all students focusing on tours and activities, with the potential to earn academic credit.

Short-term options are best for maximum support, small groups, and hands-on cultural immersion through guided tours and site visits. These trips can be more experiential and lower cost than full semesters abroad, while still giving you international experience. Whether credit-earning or not depends on the program; individual trips vary each year and allow students to pick based on schedule and academic interests.
Note: Application and payment deadline will be approximately three months before departure.\

    Picking Your Program

To find the right fit, start by identifying your primary goal and opportunities that fit you. Browse our available options, then book an appointment via Handshake for a personalized consultation. To participate in study abroad opportunities, students are required to schedule, attend a meeting, and get approval with the Study Abroad Office under CEL. Applications to programs should not be submitted independently.

    Find Your Best Fit:

    • Consortium Programs – Semester Long: Choose these for longer, customizable academic stays. These are ideal for aligning with your major and building deep, long-term skills in a specific field.
    • Language and Cultural Immersion Programs – Short-Term: Choose these for short-term, budget-friendly "cultural dives." These programs are quick, guided by Barry faculty, and include intensive tours and site visits.

Important Note: We strongly recommend consulting with the Study Abroad office as early as possible to match your goals, timeline, and finances. These meetings can take place as early as your freshman year to start planning ahead. Please contact us for a consultation before you begin an application for any program.

  • Understanding Program Costs

Total Study Abroad program costs vary by duration and destination. A typical budget includes:

    • Program Fees: Tuition, housing, and potentially meal plans and mandatory insurance.
    • Additional Expenses: Round-trip airfare, visa fees, local transportation, and personal spending.
    • Financial Aid: During your meeting with the study abroad team, a review of your financial award package will be completed to understand what is considered study abroad eligible vs. not study abroad eligible.

  • Planning an international experience is a collaborative process designed to support your academic progress. By following these steps, you can ensure that your time abroad is well-integrated with your university degree requirements.

    1. Initial Consultation and Advising

The first stage of your journey involves an individual meeting with a study abroad advisor. This session allows us to discuss your academic objectives, explore available destinations, financial commitment, and establish a clear application timeline.

    • Action Item: Please schedule an appointment with a Study Abroad Advisor through Handshake.

    2. Student Eligibility Checklist

Before beginning a formal application, please ensure you meet the following foundational criteria for international travel:

    • Early Planning: Students are encouraged to begin planning in their first year. Study abroad opportunities are available to second-year students and above.
    • Passport Validity: You must hold a valid passport that does not expire for at least six months beyond your scheduled return date. If you need to apply for or renew a passport, it is recommended to begin that process immediately.
    • Student Account Standing: Your student account must be clear of all financial and administrative holds to receive clearance for international travel.
    • Academic and Conduct Standing: Students applying to study abroad programs must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and remain in good conduct standing at the time of application and prior to departure.

    3. Academic Alignment and Credit Transfer

To ensure that your international coursework applies toward your graduation requirements, formal coordination with your academic advisor is essential.

    • Course Equivalency Approval: You will work with the university to identify specific classes abroad that fulfill your major, minor, or general education requirements.
    • Degree Path Integration: By reviewing your four-year graduation plan and your degree audit, we can identify the most effective semester for your experience, typically during your second or third year of study.

    4. Final Application and Verification

After selecting a program and confirming your eligibility, the Study Abroad Office provides comprehensive guidance, and we will assist with the specific application procedures.

    5. Deadlines

Please note for Consortium Programs – Semester Long application deadlines occur several months before the program begins.

Language and Cultural Immersion Programs – Short-Term payment deadline will be approximately three months before departure.

    6. Double Majors & Study Abroad

Students pursuing double majors are encouraged to meet with their academic advisors early to ensure proper course planning. With intentional scheduling and collaboration between departments, many double major students successfully incorporate study abroad into their academic path without delaying graduation. Early preparation is key to maximizing flexibility and academic alignment.
