Barry Alumna, Class of 1962

As a follow-up to my May 31 letter in which I announced my retirement from the presidency of our beloved Alma Mater, effective June 30, 2019, I want to share with you a few elements of the search process that the Barry Board of Trustees created.

Honoring their unique responsibility and authority, the Board, led by Chairperson John Bussel, is making plans for a suitable and smooth presidential transition beginning with the constitution of a Presidential Search Committee. The Committee, appointed and accountable to the Board, consists of thirteen (13) individuals who represent age, gender, ethnic, religious, geographic and professional diversity.

Nursing Program Celebrates 65 Years of Education and Innovation

65 Years of Education and Innovation

In 1953, Barry University opened its doors to the first class of 19 nursing graduates. Six decades later, the College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CNHS) has graduated hundreds of nurses who are highly respected professionals working throughout the globe.

The Barry University School of Nursing was founded at a time when fewer than 5 percent of women achieved college degrees. At that time, nurses were the only female contributors on the frontlines of wartime, and most were assigned to humanitarian roles. Sixty-five years later, women are soldiers on the front lines and men represent one of the fastest growing segments in the nursing profession.

Fast forward to Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018: Alumni, faculty and distinguished guests gathered to celebrate 65 years of nursing education at the Hilton Downtown Miami.

Guests enjoyed an inspirational speech by Dr. Ann Cary from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and socialized with the college’s new Teaching Robot. CNHS embraced the 65th anniversary celebration to unveil its new telepresence robot, which will help maximize distance-learning opportunities for all nursing students. The robot was made possible through a grant from the Florida Blue Foundation.

We hope you’ll mark your calendars and join us this year. Waiting until November 15 to make your annual gift means that Barry gets a match to all dollars raised on that day!
