Larry Juriga, BS '93
Chief of Police, City of North Miami
Larry Juriga is deeply rooted in the North Miami Community, having been born in the City and raised in South Florida. His parents, Larry and Nancy Juriga, have played a major role in his life. They have taught and instilled in him the values and morals of which his foundational is based. Larry has been happily married to his wife, Sallie, for 21 years. They have three beautiful daughters; Julia (20), Olivia (18), and Amelia (15).
Larry earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from Barry University in 1993, where he competed as a scholar-athlete in basketball. He earned a Master’s of Public Administration from Florida International University in 2009, and in the same year he attended and graduated from the prestigious FBI National Academy, 236th Session.
Larry has been committed to serving the community. In 1987, he began working with the City of North Miami for the Parks and Recreation Department. Policing was a calling for Larry, as his father provided 30 years of service to the North Miami Police Department, retiring from service as the Deputy Chief. Inspired by his father, Larry joined the North Miami Police Department in 1994. There, he worked as a patrol officer, prior to being transferred to the General Investigations Unit in 1997. As a detective he handled major criminal investigations. In 1998, Larry joined the North Miami S.W.A.T. Team, and was the Department’s Honor Guard Coordinator.
Larry was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1999. In 2003, he was appointed to the position of Major, and in November, 2010, he was appointed to the rank of Assistant Chief of Police. As the Assistant Chief of Police, he supervised the Administration and Investigation Division. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Larry was the Department’s Fitness Coordinator, overseeing the Physical Fitness Program.
In May of 2017, Larry was appointed to Interim Chief of Police. During this time, he attended and graduated from the Senior Management Institute for Police. In March of 2018, he received the appointment of Chief of Police. His swearing in ceremony was held at Barry University.
He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Miami-Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police, FBI National Academy Associates, Police Executive Research Forum, 5000 Role Models of Excellence, PAL of North Miami and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
Larry is a strong advocate of helping the youth, and he actively engages with the North Miami’s youngest residents. He and the staff members regularly visit schools and have lunch with the students, building positive relationships. Most recently, the Police Department held a Cops & Kids Fishing Day.
Larry proudly works with and is a diehard fan of the Miami Dolphins. He enjoys fishing, working out, and watching his daughters compete in their various activities.
