The Buccaneer is Barry’s award-winning student newspaper. It is completely produced by students. Buccaneer writers, designers, and photographers have been honored in student journalism competitions in Florida and the Southeast region. Some recent awards include the Region 3 Society for Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence First Place award for a feature story published in 2012 and Second Place for a news photo published in 2012. Buccaneer designers have also twice won Florida College Press Association competitions.
The Buccaneer is published monthly and is available online to members of the Barry community.
The Buccaneer also has a robust business side, with student ad representatives and the business manager participating in all aspects of advertising and circulation. The Buccaneer’s ad revenues support the newspaper and help pay for Buccaneer staffers to attend a national student journalism conference every Fall. Buccaneer staffers also have the opportunity to participate in other training and networking events locally and around the country.
Several recent Buccaneer staffers have gone on to pursue successful careers in journalism, but many have also found the experience invaluable as they pursued careers in other fields, including marketing, non-profit management, public relations, human resources, resort management, and graphic design.
Participation in the Buccaneer is open to all students, regardless of major, and the Buccaneer is always looking for new writers, photographers, designers, web developers and ad representatives. Interested students should contact the staff at firstname.lastname@example.org or drop by the newsroom in Landon 206C.
