PACT Community Listening Session – What changes would you like to see in your local community?

Thursday, September 24th | 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm | Thompson 208

What about your local community would you like to see change? What keeps you up at night? What in society impacts you most right now? Come together with a small group of peers to discuss these topics and share your story.

Miami PACT (People Acting in Community Together)  is a coalition of 40 interfaith congregations that use direct action and community organizing as a method for social change. Many people think of power just in terms of money, but PACT works to use people power. They have influenced major changes in affordable housing, increasing tree canopy, and so much more. Whether you can vote or not, whether you are from Miami or not, your voice deserves to be heard by elected officials.

PACT is the largest social justice organization in South Florida, and they enact change by following an annual cycle consisting of listening sessions, a voting assembly (where the issue topic is decided for the year), a research phase, and a rally for action. A key piece of their annual process is the sessions, which start the research process by indicating what the community cares about. The problems identified are then narrowed, and it is those ideas that will eventually be voted on by all the members of PACT at the fall assembly.

Barry University will be hosting our own house meeting to hear from you, the students, what social justice issues are most important to you. Join your peers and take the chance to impact broad social change in your community.
