Barry University students to spend MLK Day Weekend working on projects to lift underserved neighborhoods in Miami

What

In celebration of the annual Martin Luther King Day of Service, Barry University faculty, staff and alumni will participate in community development projects in underserved Miami neighborhoods. Projects will focus on community development and combating food insecurity in collaboration with other organizations such as the Miami Children's Initiative, Cerasee Farms and the Barry Urban Gardens. The largest of the projects, the Miami Children's Initiative, will allow members of the Barry community to help revitalize community gardens as well as paint and clean the Charles R. Drew K-8 Center, which has been closed since the beginning of the pandemic.

Why

Barry is committed to providing students opportunities to give back to their community through service learning. Spending MLK Weekend to build their local communities aligns with the spirit of Dr. Martin Lurther King Jr.’s commitment to social justice and to lift communities across America.
