In the Bachelor of Science program in Kinesiology and Sport Sciences (KSS), you will be exposed to a foundation in the movement sciences, preparing you for multiple options within the fields of sport, exercise, fitness and wellness.

    The Program

    The Kinesiology and Sport Sciences program develops students who are adaptive to the physical needs of others, creative, collaborative, culturally sensitive, empathetic, knowledgeable, proactive, reflective, ethical, and professional. The program prepares you to examine and apply the knowledge and skills learned in the program to sport, exercise, and fitness and wellness settings while working to improve current fitness challenges prevalent throughout society.

    Hands-On Experience

    The major requires a total of 120 credits, including hands-on experience before you graduate. The curriculum includes practicums in each of the three concentration areas: Coaching, Fitness Specialist, Sport, Exercise, And Performance Psychology. From there, you participate in a 6-credit internship within your chosen specialization. The practicum and internship experience takes what you’ve learned in the classroom and applies it directly to real-world situations.

    A major in Kinesiology and Sport Sciences will help to prepare you to obtain certifications in American College of Sports Medicine – Certified Personal Trainer Certification, American Council of Exercise (ACE) Personal Trainer, and Florida Department of Education Coaching Endorsement.

The Kinesiology and Sport Sciences program strives to have its graduating students:

  • Describe and summarize the legal, moral, social, cultural, and ethical issues affecting and impacting diverse individuals and groups in sport, fitness, wellness, exercise and recreation.
  • Describe and apply motor and psychology behavior theories related to skillful movement, physical activity and fitness.
  • Apply concepts of movements performance, health-related fitness, and nutrition to promote healthy lifestyles for diverse populations.
  • Apply scientific and theoretical concepts to help diverse populations move safely and effectively within sport and recreational activities (Coaching Concentration).
  • Implement fitness testing and develop appropriate sage and effective exercise prescriptions and training programs that meet specific needs of diverse populations as set forth by professional standards (Fitness Specialist Concentration).
  • Engage the sport and exercise sciences communities at the local, regional, national, and/or inter-national level through participation in service activities that promote aspects of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Admissions Overview Are you a Transfer or an International Student?

You can apply to Barry whenever it’s convenient for you. We accept applications on a rolling basis, but it’s always better to apply sooner than later. You’re considered a transfer applicant when you have at least 12 college level credits from a regionally accredited college or university. Remember, you may have to apply separately to specific programs, so please review the academic requirements for your intended major.
If you are an international student, applying as early as possible is in your best interest in order to allow ample time for immigration processing. Please note that general admission to Barry University does not guarantee acceptance into all academic majors. Also, please be aware that admission to Barry University does not guarantee that you will be granted a student visa by the United States Embassy or Consulate in your country of origin.

If you’re a full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate, you may qualify for our merit-based scholarships with awards up to $17,000, based on your cumulative GPA and standardized test scores. Scholarships are available for freshmen (including test optional), transfers, international, DACA, and Dreamer applicants. Using your admissions application, we automatically determine your eligibility.
