Institutional Review Board

Research activities reviewed by the IRB include the following:

• Research that is sponsored by Barry University or that is conducted by or under the direction of any employee or agent of Barry University in connection with his or her university responsibilities, or in which he or she has authorization to list Barry University as his or her university affiliation.
• Research that is conducted by or under the direction of any employee or agent of Barry University using any property or facility of Barry University.
• Research that involves the use of Barry University's non-public information to identify or contact human research participants or prospective participants.

• IRB Meeting Calendar and Submission Deadlines

  IRB Meetings are held on the 4th Wednesday of the month.

  There are no meetings in December or July, but submissions that do not require full-board consideration are reviewed over the summer.

  Most submissions do not require full-board review and can be submitted at any time. Research that requires full-board review must be submitted by the first Friday of a month during which the Board meets so the submission can be added to that month’s meeting agenda.

  Meetings are open to the University Community.

• IRB Members

  The Barry IRB is composed of full-time faculty from all schools and colleges within the University. Prospective members are nominated by the Chair of their Department and approved by their Dean and the Provost. The Board also includes a community member.

  Board members serve a 3-year-term. Each year, a member is asked to become the IRB Co-Chair for the following academic year. That person moves into the role of IRB Chair a year after being the Co-Chair and serves in an advisory capacity the year after leaving the Chair position.

• Creating an Account and Using IRBNet

  IRBNet is a web-based tool where researchers submit their materials for review. The IRBGuidance document provided here gives detailed instructions for creating an IRBNet account and effectively using all its features.

• IRB Required Research Ethics Training

  Researchers at Barry are required to take two courses through IRBNet to obtain Citi Training Certificates. Depending on your discipline, you will take either the:

  • Basic Course for Biomedical Researchers

  or

  • Basic Course for Social &Behavioral Research

  and

  • Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) for Biomedical Researchers

  or

  • Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) for Social &Behavioral Researchers
